But there are some software such as IBM's Visual Age for Java, Symantec Visual Cafe, which provide a nice visual environment for Java development. >>Could I written codes in Microsoft J++ then simplely move it to the SGI-O200. Probably not. Microsoft's J++ includes some non-standard MS-specific extensions (and optimizations), at least AFAIK, that will not work on machines where the J++ JRE is not available (read non-MS platforms). If youe webserver is on a Unix box, then you would have Sun's JRE running on the server, so your J++ applets would not run. >>I have heard JDBC. Which platform needs JDBC? On Server side or On Client side? If you need to access a database on your server machine, then you would need JDBC installed on the server. >> How can I use it!? For applets that use JDBC, you would need to create a jar file with your applet code and the JDBC driver for the database you are using to connect to, and download it to your web page. Alternatively, you can specify the directory where the class files reside with the CODEBASE argument, like so: <APPLET CODE=myClasses.jar></APPLET> or <APPLET CODE=myApplet.jar CODEBASE=/myJarFiles></APPLET> or something similar. Refer to your book/manual for exact syntax. The (apparent) benefit of applets is that you can distribute the client and server processing, ie you do all the presentation logic in the applet and the applet runs using the processing power of your client PC, and once you are done, you simply send the results back to the server. However, if your presentation logic does not include complex user entry validation, you can probably also plain HTML (or with Javascript for simple validation) on your client and use CGI with Perl or ESQL/C, or better still PHP on your server. Perl, Java (from Sun), and PHP are free software. You can also use Java applets on the client and Java servlets on your server.
