Connecting via VB6

Despite being able to connect to informix via various other tool, i.e. Access 97, 2000, WinSQL to name a few, VB6 with 2.1 MDAC and SP3 refuses to connect. Here is the error message I get: Test connection failed becuase of an error initializing provider. Catastrophic failure. Does anyone, anyone has an idea how I can solve this? I searched the knowledge base without any success. "Catastrophic" does not return any results, among other attempts.
