We have successfully split a disk as described above, but only when using the HP "hard partition" guidelines (with /etc/disktab) under HPUX 7.x and 8.x. I think we have also been successful using Logical Volume Manager under HPUX 9.x but I wasn't directly involved and don't know exactly what was set up. (We use LVM successfully, but I don't know if a disk was split between a file system and a raw partition in any of our configurations.)
