Look at your transaction isolation level. If it is set to cursor
stability or repeatable read, a select will lock rows, which then cannot
be updated. See the manual for SET ISOLATION. If your database is mode
ansi, it will have default isolation of repeatable read. Don't forget to
commit work after selects if you have a high isolation level.
