Kernel Parameters for HP-UX 11.0, IDS7.3X and BaaN

Greetings, I am in the process of upgrading my BaaN server ( HP 9000 K250 w/ 4 processors and 2.5 GB of RAM on 10.20 running IDS 7.30 UC5) to a new HP 9000 N class ( 6-360 MHZ processors w 6 GB RAM) server running 11.0 and ids 7.3X. I was wondering if there are any O/S specific Kernel parameters that need to be set for either the engine or the Baan application running upon it. I have made a note of our current Kernel, and also looked at the suggestions in the $INFORMIXDIR/release directory. I am primarily concerned about Shared memory issues- both in the Kernel and the onconfig file ( shmmax, locks, buffers) as the new system will have 6 GB of RAM configured, and I want to make sure that the engine makes the best use of all that memory. I was also wondering about the proper amount of system swap space to configure for this amount of memory. I was planning 1.5 to 2 times the amount of physical memory...but Baan recommends 2.5 to 3 times. Does this make a significent difference to the operation of the IDS engine? Thanks, Russ Kahler ERP Systems Administrator The Andersons Maumee, Ohio Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
Russ, Speaking from the OS side - the default dbc_max_pct is 50, or 50% of RAM. You will need to reduce it. Also, the maxswapchunks default is 256, meaning your system would only recognize 512 Mbyte swap space (maxswapchunks times swchunk). You should increase maxswapchunks arbitrarily large. The amount of swap space required is completely dependent upon the requirements of your Informix and Baan apps. Swap space will need to be reserved for programs before they will run, and there is not always a 1:1 ratio between the memory requirements and swap space requirements of an application. Swap space of 1-1/2 to 3 times the amount of RAM is a heck of a lot of disk space. I'd set it up initially so that after monitoring what's actually required, you can reclaim some lvols from swap for other use. And remember that with maxswapchunks set arbitrarily high, you can dynamically add swap space later, with minimal hassle. Will your applications be 32-bit or 64-bit? When you go from HP-UX 10.20 to 11.0, assuming you're running 32-bit apps on that 64-bit N-Class OS, you will have the option of using memory windows. And you would probably want to. Put in a call to the HP Response Center for details. But basically, the HP-UX 10.20 aprox 2.75 Gbyte limit for shared virtual memory objects eg shared memory, can exist in each and every 11.0 memory window you define. The limitation is that processes cannot share resources eg shared memory, across memory windows. The benefit is that you would be better able to use all 6 Gbyte of memory when running 32-bit apps on either 32-bit or 64-bit 11.0 (and the N-Class is 64-bit). If your apps are 64-bit, then there's no need for anything like memory windows.
