Re: Informix 11.5 worse than 11.1 and 10?
Posted in 2008
Not a technical fault report: a poster said an IIUG Insider editorial (Gary Ben-Israel) had made him nervous that IDS 11.50 might be less stable or slower than 11.10 and 10.00, and asked the group to confirm. Respondents, including Fernando Nunes, quoted the editorial in full to show it explicitly said no such thing — it merely urged IBM not to let new features erode Informix's traditional stability, small footprint and performance. Art Kagel added that 11.50 has everything 11.10/10.00 had plus extras, praising the index self-join optimization and dynamic SQL in SPL in xC2. The original poster accepted the reassurance; no actual defect or fix was involved.

Unfortunately not. The IIUG Insider (Issue #99) September 2008 editorial by Gary Ben-Israel made me nervous. I was hoping a discussion here would clear things up. -L.S.

Thank you for telling me not to worry. I greatly value your opinions and advice. Plus I have a thick skin. But I am afraid that you have scared others away from commenting. If that is true then, to those people, please reply to my email address that you can find by clicking on "View profile". -L.S.

Obnoxio may live up to his name but after reading this newsgroup for many years, I have the impression he knows Informix pretty well. > But I am afraid that you have > scared others away from commenting. I think this is less likely than you seem to think. OTC is well known in this newsgroup and it doesn't look like any of the regular experts ever hesitate to correct him if he were wrong. > If that is true then, to those > people, please reply to my email address that you can find by clicking > on "View profile". My newsreader doesn't have a "View profile" option anywhere. Just because Google offer a web interface to Newsgroups doesn't mean that everyone uses it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newsreader_(Usenet) http://www.newsreaders.info/started-newsreaders.htm -- RGB

I answered through the IIUG mailing list already, but I think this should be in c.d.i...: I apologize for the way I'm gone say this, but I feel I have to be clear... You didn't hear a rumor... you're actually creating one. Let's see what was written: ----------------------------------- "Along with the 2007 survey results we will soon be asking you to participate in the 2008 IIUG survey. Please take a few minutes and fill it out. It helps us make IDS a better product, gives us the chance to be heard as a collective group, and who knows, you may get your favorite feature into the next release. Adding features to IDS is important to maintain its current technological advantage. I would, however, like to say a few words in favor of the old features - those that are the reason we chose Informix to begin with and the reason we stayed with it. The great performance, the small footprint, but above all the robustness and stability - knowing that as long as you do not unplug the power it will keep on going. This was a quality that could not be replaced by stronger hardware. Don't read between the lines. I am not insinuating that IDS 11.5 is not as stable or fast as 11.1 and 10 were. I am just asking Jerry and his team not neglect these old feature when going after new ones." ----------------------------------- Nowhere, and I want to emphasize _NOWHERE_, in these lines, the author is saying 11.5 isn't stable or has bad performance. It is just asking the product manager a simple and fair request: Don't let new features get in the way of the well known quality of the product. IDS 11.50 will not be perfect, as no any other version is, was, or will be. But until now I haven't heard any big issue with it. So, no reason to get nervous. As with any other version, if you're planning to move to IDS 11.50 you really need to test it in your environment. And also stay alert, I repeat as with any other version, for any critical issue that IBM may publish about it, it one appears. By the way... Today we're having the "Community action day": http://informix-technology.blogspot.com/2008/09/community-day-october-1-what-and-why.html Thanks for participating ;) -- Fernando Nunes Portugal http://informix-technology.blogspot.com My email works... but I don't check it frequently...

Just ask the missus. But you are deliberately taking something Gary said very clearly and willfully turning it on its head. You're clearly a major league conspiracy theorist. Don't you just love people who create aliases. ;-) Gary's point is that you should be able to add new features without breaking the old system. To some extent he's right and IDS has improved over time. Even after absorbing Illustra's ORDBMS features the speed and performance came back. (7.3x was faster that 9.x) 11.x, I believe is faster than both. I think the reason Gary made his statements is that there is some concern about "blending" features found in DB2 in to the IDS code stream. If not done properly, you can screw things up. Luckily this is not the case. I've loved the product hated the management/marketing and sales for fscking things up. If you want a case in point, look at Oracle and to some extent DB2. Ever wonder why they don't push extensibility? Because they can't. Neither code base, Oracle Cartridges and DB2's Extenders can keep up with IDS's datablades. This is primarily why I'm so pissed off at Ambush, Jerry, Alyse & company. You have a product where things were done right. Only to live in the shadow of a legacy application ported from the mainframe. "Community Action Day?" LOL... never heard about it. Says a lot about IDS marketing. ;-) But hey! What do I know? -G
11.50 is fine and has every feature that 11.10 and 10.00 have and more. REALLY love the index self join optimization and dynamic SQL in SQL works great in the xC2 release. Thank you all for responding. I'm glad that Informix 11.5 is better in every way than 11.1 and 10. I am sorry if I caused such a ruckus. By the way, I have been reading this newsgroup for years (almost decades) and have learned a lot from you guys (gals included). -L.S.
