Re: An Oracle question
Posted in 2000
Original question: is there an Oracle equivalent of Informix's dbschema -d to dump a full database schema, since DESCRIBE and the data dictionary views weren't sufficient? No technical answer is given. The first reply is a joke ("migrate to Informix"), and the rest of the thread degenerates into an Oracle-vs-Informix flame war about market share, job listings and whether popularity indicates quality. No resolution to the dbschema question is recorded.

Yes. Migrate your application to Informix. :-)

Now why in the world would anyone want to do that?
You guys a little nervous that Oracle is eating you alive, and Informix is
basically in the toilet?
Give me a break, migrate to Informix....NOT!

Ability???? hahahahahahahah....that's funny too! Get real baby. If Oracle were purely hype, they would have been dead a long time ago, just like Infomix. Are you trying to say that the government knows anything at all about ability? My God, they spend $600 on a hammer! Okay, Okay I was just trying to get people going, and I guess it worked.. Now, I must say I disagree with your below statements tho, because I surely don't see companies using Informix. I live in the heart of the Silicon Valley, and there surely aren't any companies using Informix out here...at least very few are. You go to a site such as Dice.com, and do a search for Informix vs. Oracle in Northern CA and you tell me who has the market share :-)). (uh, 1,500 jobs for Informix, 13,000 for Oracle). Does that mean it will always be that way? Maybe DB2 will make a comeback, so whose to say. Honestly tho, I can't say I know Informix well enough to make a judgement, so I'll lay off on that one until I know better. mars1972@my-deja.com wrote: > In article <390E17D3.2882A065@yahoo.com>, > Nikita <Nikita@yahoo.com> wrote: > > Ability???? > > hahahahahahahah....that's funny too! > > Get real baby. > > If Oracle were purely hype, they would have been dead a long time ago, > just > > like Infomix. > > > > A large portion of Oracle's market share comes from government > contracts. There's a lot of Informix in the midwest, though some of the large companies use some of each. I _have_ heard that Informix is used quite a bit overseas, eg, India, southwest asia, Norway, etc. I have a friend that lives not too far from you (at least compared to where I live) and he says pretty much the same thing. Not much Informix, but some. Sure, as soon as you tell us how market share is a relevant factor in a DBMS competitive evaluation. All market share alone shows is how many sheep there are in the world. If you choose a piece of software because someone else chose it, you should be fired because you have added no value to the decision process and hence you are expendable. Karl
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah...whatever, your response shows that you haven't read the thread. Must matter to people here, because they are the ones starting that aspect of the conversation. I have never implied that market share equals a better product, altho that at times can be an indication when there is definitely competition -- which is why Oracle could work in that example, and Microsoft couldn't. And in terms of chosing software, I am far from one to choose something because someone else chose it -- that doesn't matter to me. However, I will choose a piece of software that has been benchmarked for and with us at Sun Labs that blows away everything else. Later.
