Fw: Restoring Ontape to a different instance on th
Posted in 2016
Larry (IDS 11.50.FC7 on Solaris 10) asked how to restore an ontape archive into a different, already-running instance on the same machine, wanting just one database from the archive. Art Kagel pointed him to archecker (table-level restore), explaining the schema command file needs source DATABASE/CREATE TABLE definitions, target database/table definitions, and an INSERT INTO target:tbl SELECT * FROM source:tbl per table — easily generated from dbschema output via awk/perl — with environment variables pointing at the target instance and the dbspace in place. Marcus Haarmann offered the alternative of restoring the whole instance with ontape -r -rename to new chunk paths. No confirmation of the outcome is recorded.

Also, to add a little more information, the new dbspace already exists in the
other instance and is populated with chunks. I only want to restore one of the
databases in the archive if possible.

I know I have seen this before, but I can't find where I may have saved the
information.
What is the easiest way to restore an ontape backup to a different instance on
the same computer? Are there any steps that someone may have typed up before
that you can share?
Larry
If there is a way to "restore" just one database from the ontape or onbar
archive then I'd like to know how; my guess is you'll have to dbexport then
dbimport the database.

Ahh, so, ypu don't wamt to restore to create a new instance on the same
host, but to restore a database from an archive to a different running
instance? Correct?
You do that with archecker. Look int the Backup and Restore Guide or the

So, if I have, let's say 100+ tables, is this going to be very tedious, or is
there a way to specify an entire database?

The only way to restore a whole database using archecker is to include
source database and table schema, target database and schema, and an insert
into ... select * from statement for each table. It's not hard to write an
awk or perl script to read a dbschema/myschema output file and create the
required command file.

Oops. So the schema file will look something like this when complete:
DATABASE original;
CREATE TABLE tbl_1 (
one INT;
two CHAR(100);
) IN dbs1;
CREATE TABLE tbl_2 (
one INT;
two CHAR(100);
) IN dbs1;
DATABASE copy;
CREATE TABLE tbl_1 (
one INT;
two CHAR(100);
) IN dbs2;
CREATE TABLE tbl_2 (
one INT;
two CHAR(100);
) IN dbs2;
INSERT INTO copy:tbl_1 SELECT * FROM original:tbl_1;
INSERT INTO copy:tbl_2 SELECT * FROM original:tbl_2;
You can create the empty tables before the archecker run or rely on
archecker to create them for you. IB that the database has to exist already
though, it's not clear in the manual and I've only used it to restore to an
existing database myself.

Thank you. I am sure it wouldn't be too hard for an awk or perl script expert,
but I have not done a lot with either. I would have to manually edit the
schema.sql file unless someone out there already has a script that they have
used in the past.

So, doing as you show below, I just have to make sure that I have my
environment variables pointing to the new instance and the database created

Hi, you could also restore the whole instance (in case you have enough space,
and it
works without scripting.)
To do this on the same machine, you have to have a location for each chunk and
do the restore with chunk rename options. See ontape -r -rename option.
Then you get the state of the database when your backup was taken (I suspect
you have to recover historical values).
Since archecker has to work through the whole backup, there is no big
difference
in execution time for both options.

So, doing as you show below, I just have to make sure that I have my
environment variables pointing to the new instance and the database created
and populated with chunks, and I am good to go?

Oops. So the schema file will look something like this when complete:
DATABASE original;
CREATE TABLE tbl_1 (
one INT;
two CHAR(100);
) IN dbs1;
CREATE TABLE tbl_2 (
one INT;
two CHAR(100);
) IN dbs1;
DATABASE copy;
CREATE TABLE tbl_1 (
one INT;
two CHAR(100);
) IN dbs2;
CREATE TABLE tbl_2 (
one INT;
two CHAR(100);
) IN dbs2;
INSERT INTO copy:tbl_1 SELECT * FROM original:tbl_1;
INSERT INTO copy:tbl_2 SELECT * FROM original:tbl_2;
You can create the empty tables before the archecker run or rely on
archecker to create them for you. IB that the database has to exist already
though, it's not clear in the manual and I've only used it to restore to an
existing database myself.

Pretty much, yes. That and create the schema file and archecker command
file and go.
