A user asked whether he could install Informix IDS on a home PC running a downloaded copy of Sun Solaris, using cooked files instead of a real Unix server. Replies confirmed it is possible, but only with the Solaris x86/Intel port of the OS (not SPARC binaries), and IDS for Intel Solaris was released only as a 64-bit build, so 64-bit Intel/AMD hardware and a 64-bit Solaris install are required. Cooked files are fine for the dbspaces. One poster noted some confusion over x86 vs. x64 terminology, but the overall answer stood.

Hello all,
I have planned to install sunsolaris OS in my PC at home and like to install
informix on that OS.
Is it possible to install informix this way (without unix server)using cooked
file in the downloaded sunsolaris OS?
Please clarify ,any help would be appreciated.
Thanks & regards,
Bala.
Yes, as long as you use SUN SOLARIS INTEL port and not the SUN SOLARIS SPARC
port.

IDS has only been released for 64 bit Solaris on 64 bit Intel/AMD
chips, without that hardware and O/S you have no chance !
Keith
As keith noted, you need to have 64bit Intel Solaris running (you need
compatible hardware) and you need Informix Intel Solaris 64 bit.
Given these two conditions you'll be able to install Informix.
You can use cooked files.

No. Intel Solaris is Solaris for Intel hardware. It's a different OS
(binaries are different) from Sparc Solaris.
And as Keith noted you need the Informix Intel Solaris port which exists
only for x64 hardware.

Hi,
I think this has got a bit confused. The Intel Solaris port for Intel is I
think known as X86.
The 64 bit architecture is another issue.
I might be talking rubbish though - it's ages since I dealt with Solaris on
Intel
