Well, for the RAID 5 vs other RAID, read the past postings in deja news. As far as JBOD vs RAID 1/0, I used to be a JBOD fanatic, however my experience has caused me to switch, very reluctantly, into the pro-RAID camp. I do not think that RAID 1/0 striping can necessarily outperform a well thought out Informix FRAGMENTATION scheme, but you need to know your data very well to FRAGMENT successfully. Even more than striping, however, the increased performance of RAID, I believe, comes from the cache. Most JBOD setups don't have any cache to speak of; our RAID array has 256 Mb of cache, which 'brute forces' performance far above our JBOD performance on the same H/W platform. Now I've got your attention, please ignore the subject line. What I need to know (in order to overrule an IT manager who is determined to install a RAID setup and won't listen to any arguments against) is exactly WHAT the disadvantages / advantages are between using RAID and JBOD. I tried earlier but the only reply I got was from one Mr. O. Clown (thanx, btw). I think I need to push JBOD but there's a huge difference between gut feeling and reasoned debate. Exactly why does Art hate RAID 5 so much? He keeps saying NO RAID 5! NO RAID 5! etc. ad nauseam but WHY? TIA MAlc Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
But Sky, why not use one or more large RAID10 arrays AND Informix fragmentation. This is something like checkering, which is actually striping mulitple stripe sets to improve peak load performance. It works very well, BTW. Art S.
