you obviously haven't gone beyond a standalone online 5? IDS v7 has had 2PC (to and from any informix version, including xps, of late) since 1995 or there about, and with none of the federated complexity - you just do it without having to create anything. And you could do that kind of stuff with online 5 too, if you bought the I-Star addon.. XPS has had external (as in file system, and multiple formats supported) tables since day one, while V9 has had a virtual table interface and virtual index interface since 97 I believe. you can create table representation of just about anything:- from directory structures, to pipe delimited files, to cisam files, to oracle databases, to ... you name it, it can be done. True, you don't get that many prebuilt access methods, but that doesn't mean to say that a very powerful feature isn't there...
