RE: SHMBASE Address - From Gigi

Sorry, I missed this from 3 weeks ago - I hope you've found a solution by now! If you HAVEN'T, this is usually a symptom of not setting the kernel parameters. You can leave the SHMBASE setting as it is supplied. My $ONCONFIG file shows 0x10000000 so I'm not sure where you got 0 from. You should be able to restore the default value, which you will find in onconfig.std. If you don't setup sufficient kernel resources, the error message from the engine will make you think you have got the wrong SHMBASE. One of the version 5 engines kept suggesting a different address and I went round several curves before I figured there must be something more to this problem than it first appears. Here's our significant kernel parameters: NAIOBUF 2000 NAIOHBUF 25 NAIOLOCKTBL 200 NAIOPROC 20 NAIOREQ 2000 NAIOREQPP 2000 SEMMAP 8192 SEMMNI 8192 SEMMNS 8192 SEMMNU 100 SEMMSL 60 SHMALL 512 SHMMAX 50331648 SHMSEG 6 You can edit these parameters directly in the relevant file if you know where to find them, but if you don't, go through scoadmin, Hardware/Kernel Manager, then pick [Tune Parameters...] and the parameters will be found in sections 5(AIO) 15(Semaphores) and 16(Shared Data). Quit from there, pick [Relink Kernel] and away you go. For some of these parameters, the kernel build will complain that it exceeds the recommended maximum. But we know better... I can't remember which parameter it is, but you will need to edit the file /etc/conf/cf.d/mtune and make sure the parameters listed there look like this before you enter scoadmin: * Asynchronous IO Parameters NAIOPROC 5 1 20 NAIOREQ 120 5 2000 NAIOBUF 120 5 2000 NAIOHBUF 25 1 500 NAIOREQPP 120 30 2000 NAIOLOCKTBL 10 5 200 * Semaphore Parameters SEMMAP 10 10 10000 SEMMNI 10 10 10000 SEMMNS 60 60 10000 SEMMNU 30 10 100 SEMMSL 25 25 60 SEMOPM 10 10 10 SEMUME 10 10 10 SEMVMX 32767 32767 32767 SEMAEM 16384 16384 16384 * Shared Memory Parameters SHMMAX 524288 131072 2147483647 SHMMIN 1 1 1 SHMMNI 100 100 2000 ------ Original Message ------ I am facing a problem .while trying to install a Informix Database on Dell 2300/500MHz Intel / Sco Openserver Unix platform. with memory of 512MB The message is like this ILLEGAL MEMORY ADDRESS showing in the logfile, when I used SHMBASE=0x0 on the configuration file. Anybody can help in this matter
