Change Char to varchar

Hi Friends, I have problem when I changed column type char(10) to varchar(20), if column char is not null the change complete with 10 spaces for records with size less than 10 on column of new type, if column char allow null the change remove spaces(Trim) in column of new type, what's going ? thanks everyone for all. hugs.
