Hi all, would someone please tell me If I can make a raw device dbspace with size larger than 2GBytes ?? if I can't do this, pls. tell me why.. the platform I'm using is sun solaris 2.5.1 with IDS 7.2 ... I used to think that I can format the disk into slices larger than 2GB (i.e. 3GB) and use the first 2GB of the slice as one dbspace, and then use the last 1GB in another dbspace with offset set to 2GB, unfortunately it didn't work !!!! honestly I don't know why, and it's very frustrating since I had to use cocked files instead or otherwise I would have wasted a lot of space since I was limited by a max. number of partitions of 7 ( a UNIX constraint ). please feed me back. regards, Hazem. -----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- http://www.dejanews.com/ Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own
Informix confirmed to me some while ago that 2GIG is max size of (CHUNKSIZE-OFFSETSIZE). ie. you can have a max chunk of 2gig if the offset is 0, or 1gig if the offset is 1gig. There are exceptions and work-arounds as listed below: - 64bit engines *may* allow bigger offsets/chunk sizes (we used DEC Alpha 64 bit at the time and 7.11 did NOT allow the bigger offsets - it appears the engine has to be compiled with some kind of 64bit flag set). - Use a logical storage manager (LSM) to divide your physical disk up so to the OS it looks like many smaller disks of 2GIG. This is how we get around the 2GIG limit and I think most other sites also use this workaround. Hope this helps PR hazemb@my-dejanews.com wrote: > > Hi all, > > would someone please tell me If I can make a raw device dbspace with size > larger than 2GBytes ?? > if I can't do this, pls. tell me why.. > the platform I'm using is sun solaris 2.5.1 with IDS 7.2 ... > > I used to think that I can format the disk into slices larger than 2GB (i.e. > 3GB) and use the first 2GB of the slice as one dbspace, and then use the last > 1GB in another dbspace with offset set to 2GB, unfortunately it didn't work > !!!! > > honestly I don't know why, and it's very frustrating since I had to use cocked > files instead or otherwise I would have wasted a lot of space since I was > limited by a max. number of partitions of 7 ( a UNIX constraint ). > > please feed me back. > > regards, > > Hazem. > > -----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- > http://www.dejanews.com/ Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own
Thanks Paul, you've made things very clear for me,please tell me more about logical storage managers (LSM)for different platforms and where can I get them .... best regards, Hazem.
