Should I make the 200 gig one large >disk of all 2 gig chunks? Or should I have 3 striped drives, one for >rootdbs, logs and the last for data? Tough call. 200GB is about the margin point for me. Less than 200Gb and I generally treat disks as singleton drives to maximise throughput out of placement. A1000 or D1000? Or A5000? 9 or 18 GB disks? Maybe try this: 1 disk for rootdbs 1 disk for plogdbs 1 disk for llogdbs 1 (or 2 or 3) for tempdbs's remainder in one stripe for data. No use to stripe 6 disks together when bus can only handle throughput of 3 or 4 disks striped Say substained max throughput per disk is 40Meg/s. 4 * 40 = 160. On a ULTRA SCSI 160 the max per controller is 160 Meg/s not taking the bandwidth of the backplane into consideration. Better to have 2 stripe sets of 3 disks each. Mirror also affects the number of disks. Search deja for post I send a while back. {informix visagie stripe} Test test test. Each system is different. Or: 1 stripe for root, plog and llog (relatively small) 1 stripe for temp Sounds ok. Take 4 disks and stripe together. Create 4 temp dbspaces. If bad temp IO, you can always unstripe them and still have 4 temp dbspaces to different disks. Test. 1 stripe for data >The Sun is also new to us, so should I be ordering Veritas Volume Manager >to handle all those 2 gig chunks? Yep. Depending if your hardware RAID controllers can handle LUNS. 6 * 18 Gig disks mirrored {18 + 18 + 18} then striped = RAID 10 {54 Gig} then split into smaller LUNS {4 LUNS = 15.5 Gig each hardware level} then Solaris format partition 0->6 2 Gig slices + partition 7 1.5 Gig I only know of COMPAQ and EMC that can do this. Never worked on SUN hardware RAID. Think you will need VVM >Last question (for now), what software besides 7.3 engine is needed on the >Sun box. There will be no apps on it, just the DB. Nothing I can think of. Client SDK, maybe. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
