I-STAR Performance

I recently installed I-STAR on two nodes and did a performance comparison of a simple ,i.e., no joins, single table query, done first locally and then remotely. What I found is that the price of "going remote" is roughly 10X. In other words, if I run the query getting the data entirely from the local machine it takes 1/10th the time as the same query getting the data entirely from the remote machine. This strikes me as a rather high penalty to pay for going remote. If anyone else out there has done similar tests I would be interested in hearing their experiences. I find hard to believe that the world at large can live with this level of performance degradation. It is entirely possible that this may be platform dependent, especially since I am using a rather odd UNIX platform - Interactive Unix Rev 3.0.1 - running on a 486DX2 PC Platform. On the Informix side I am running Online 5.0.0 UC3 and I-STAR 5.0.0 UC3. -- --Ray Paul rpaul@netcom.com
