Maximun Number of Users
Posted in 2003
Sue needed to raise the user/connection limit to 1200 on Informix 5.10 (HP-UX 11.00) but hit an "illegal number of users" error above ~1000. Replies explained this is a hard engine limit, not a licensing or kernel issue: the MAXUSERS parameter in tbconfig caps out at 999 connections in 5.x (Jonathan Leffler confirmed the same limit in 5.11 and 5.20, but not in 7.31 and later). Suggested options were connection pooling at the application level or upgrading the engine; the poster opted to consider an upgrade.

Hi I wonder if anyone can help me with this please. I am trying to increase the number of users on our informix database (5.10!! I know I know...) to 1200. I can get to 1000, after which I get a message " illegal number of users". Can someone tell me if this is a licensing issue, or can I change a kernel parameter to enable this extra increase? I have very little Informix or DB knowledge, but am quite comfortable with unix. We are running this on hp-ux 11:00 on a K class 370 Any help appreciated. Many thanks Sue -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG

I think there is a parameter in tbconfig called MAXUSERS which can take maximum value of 999 only. In other words, one can not have more than 999 connections to 5.10 engine. -- email id is bogus
If this is an option, use connection pooling. Of course, this is only applicable if you don't have over 1000 users *actually* using the database (not application) at the same moment. And of course, this is not something an administrator would normally do - it's more up to the programmers... Do you know by any chance, is the parameter limitation is the same for later versions of Informix? Thanks again Sue -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG

I heard that Wal-Mart uses Informix to track inventory, and that it's the largest database in the world. If their cash registers update this, I'm guessing they would need at least one connection per store even with connection pooling. They have about 2000 stores according to their web site. But this is speculation, as I have no idea how they are really set up. -Ken John Carlson wrote: > On Wed, 29 Oct 2003 21:06:01 +0000 (UTC), "Sue Jones" > <lyric@lyric.plus.com> wrote: > > >>"rkusenet" <rkusenet@sympatico.ca> wrote in message >>news:bnoqnd$135n8o$1@ID-75254.news.uni-berlin.de >> >> >> >>>I haven't worked with 5.x after 1995, so my information may be dated. >>> >>>I think there is a parameter in tbconfig called MAXUSERS which can take maximum >>>value of 999 only. The same limit applies to 5.11 and 5.20.
