Why would they laugh? Using dd seems to be a perfectly legitimate way to move the data if it is done competently. If I have a set of disks set up so I can swing them over to another machine and bring up the instance would they laugh then? How is this different? I can understand you saying whether or not you are competent enough to use dd is not Informix Tech support's responsibility, and I will agree. But as long as your media is good and you set up your other server properly, dd will work fine and in some situations might even be appropriate.
