RE: upgrading processors

You did not state whether your IDS server is used for OLTP or DSS. With DSS I would definitely go for more processors. Even with OLTP I would tend to go with more processors, unless your applications run on the same server and are very CPU intensive. With only 2 CPUs you cannot really take advantage of IDS's parallel processing capabilities. Have you looked at: http://www.rs6000.ibm.com/hardware/factsfeatures.html? Earlier versions showed the following relative OLTP performance numbers: 2-way F50 (with 332 MHz CPUs) - 17.9 2-way F50 (with 166 MHz CPUs) - 14.9 4-way F50 (with 166 MHz CPUs) - 27.1 In fact, those numbers can still be viewed at: http://www.rs6000.ibm.com/hardware/downloads/system_perf.pdf If you have 2 similar servers, you could perform both upgrades: 1) Replace 2 166 MHz CPUs in server A with 332 MHz CPUs; 2) Add the 2 166 MHz CPUs from server A to server B. With a RS/6000 and two - 166 Mhz processors, one 5 Gig database spread across 6 disks, would it be better with IDS 7.31UC3 to upgrade our two 166 MHZ to two 332 MHZ or buy 2 more 166 MHZ for a total of four 166 MHZ processors? Our load is mostly queries, I would say 60%, and 35% is updates and inserts. 5% is compiling and misc. Any suggestions? Thanks so much, you all have been really great in responses in the past!
