IDS, Linux and OOM killer
Posted in 2006
Poster ran IDS 10.00.UC4 on RHEL ES 4 (8GB RAM, 4GB swap, ~2.5GB shared memory) and found the Linux OOM killer terminating the oninit process roughly twice a month, always during the nightly ON-Bar dbspace backup. He had already tried setting vm.overcommit_memory=2 (no effect) and had just switched ONCONFIG RESIDENT from -1 to 0 without knowing the outcome. Replies drifted into distribution advocacy (SuSE/Ubuntu vs Red Hat) and which platforms IBM certifies; no actual diagnosis or fix for the OOM kills is recorded in the thread.

Good morning/evening,
We have installed IDS 10.00.UC4 on a Linux box, RedHat Enterprise ES
v4.
The server has 8Gb RAM and 4Gb swap. IDS uses normally only about 2.5Gb
of shared memory.
Unfortunately, this nice server is not stable:
the linux kernel regularly kills oninit process, throug his 'OOM
Killer' mechanism.
The server is dedicated to IDS, and the problem occurs when onbar is
launched to backup the dbspaces. The backup process runs every night,
and the problem occurs about twice a month.
We can then see in the 'messages' file:
Nov 22 02:10:04 dat5ix kernel: Free swap: 3919176kB
Nov 22 02:10:04 dat5ix kernel: 2359296 pages of RAM
Nov 22 02:10:04 dat5ix kernel: 1867710 pages of HIGHMEM
Nov 22 02:10:04 dat5ix kernel: 282150 reserved pages
Nov 22 02:10:04 dat5ix kernel: 2115705 pages shared
Nov 22 02:10:04 dat5ix kernel: 48 pages swap cached
Nov 22 02:10:04 dat5ix kernel: Out of Memory: Killed process 3953
(oninit).
Have you yet experienced such a problem ?
If yes, how did you solve it ?
We have tried:
- setting vm.overcommit_memory = 2 in /etc/sysctl.conf file : no
effect
- setting RESIDENT 0 in $ONCONFIG file (it was -1 before); this change
has been made today; I don't know if it will solve the problem.
Thank you for your attention,
Philippe Chantry
You can easily fix this by installing a different version of Linux.
I recommend Ubuntu/Kubuntu or SuSE, these are much better distributions
of Linux than RedHat and don't contain an OOM Killer. They are much easier to
maintain, and much better organization of administration tools.
RedHat sucks compared to these other versions plain and simple.
:-)

However, in the true spirit of OpenSource (not!) IDS is supported only on RedHat or SuSE.
Yes,
I run SuSE 10.0 on two of my machines and 1 still runs 9.x.
I prefer the SuSE distro because its extremely easy to install.
I'm currently running IDS on a 64 bit 2 core box and don't have any
problems. Note: It's a development box and I've had to bounce it a couple
of times, but IDS is still in one piece. ;-)
One copy for less than $100.00 that can be used on several machines?
Can't beat that. (Note: Figure out how much time it takes to download and
burn a "free" version. It aint "free" when you consider the extra time
spent. (I may be easy, but I'm not cheap. ;-)

How come I was at an eBU session a couple of years ago and picked up a SuSE distro? ;-) I think that the issue is that they have to specify that they are certifying against a specific kernel. But that they are using RedHat as their distro for certification. I think that may be changing in the near future. ;-)

We run our production server on SLES 9 and our test server on OpenSuSE 10.1; never seen OOM behaviour.

Your free to run IDS on any distribution - unsupported.
