FASTPOLL with AIX
Posted in 2009
The poster, on IDS 10.00.UC8 under AIX 5.2, asked whether the FASTPOLL setting recommended for AIX was available in version 10 and whether it was an ONCONFIG or OS setting. Answer: it is an ONCONFIG parameter, introduced in 10.00.xC5 (IBM technote/doc notes cited), despite one reply claiming it was v11-only. Others explained FASTPOLL uses OS-specific fast polling (POLLSET on AIX, /dev/poll on Solaris/HP, epoll on Linux) to speed network polling, with benefits typically only above ~300 concurrent connections. A side comment warned that 10.0xC8 has known memory problems and suggested 10.0FC8W2.

Hello all, We just (finally) upgraded to version 10.UC8 of IDS (can't go to 11.50 until I upgrade AIX to 5.3). During the conferance last week it was noted to turn on FASTPOLL for AIX, but it appears as this is a version 11 config parameter from what I can find digging around the IBM web pages. I thought it was mentioned that it was able to be used in ver 10 as well. If this is the case, is it a config parameter or is it a OS environment setting? Can somebody shed some light? Again, using 10.00.UC8, AIX is 5.2.10.6. Thanks in adance, Pete Dickson

I can only install what our vendor gives us. But I will mention it to the vendor. Our vendor handles all the "major" informix upgrades/etc then I "assist" with the DBA work on the engines... and i found that it's just a config (as I thought). http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21249712 Pete

It's an onconfig parameter, but as far as I know, it's for 11 only. -- Cheers, Obnoxio The Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com The following is a disclaimer and a protest at the collection, retention and sharing of my personal mail by the morally bankrupt state. FASTPOOL appeared in 10.00.xC5: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21249712 http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v10/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.docnotes.doc/uc5/ids_admin_docnotes_10.0.html FYI Clown you responded to a post mentioning FASTPOLL for 10.00.xC5 in 2007.. http://www.iiug.org/forums/ids/index.cgi/noframes/read/8497. By the way what was this here http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/blogs/page/gbowerman?tag=idug about "the quadratic dependency between network connections and SOC VP kernel processing time , and FASTPOLL" ?? What exactly does FASTPOLL do? Use poll() instead of select() ???

I don't even remember what I had for breakfast this morning, HTF would I remember something I wrote in 2007?????? -- Cheers, Obnoxio The Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com The following is a disclaimer and a protest at the collection, retention and sharing of my personal mail by the morally bankrupt state. No: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.aix.basetechref/doc/basetrf1/pollset.htm But AFAIU it can have different implementations.... Hi David, To quote from a presentation I have * Fast polling is an OS specific implementation to replace the Legacy C function poll(). * /dev/poll on Solaris and HP * epoll on Linux * POLLSET on AIX The reality is that it is basically improves the performance of networking polling. The larger number of client connections, and you will see a bigger benefit. Generally speaking you need about 300 concurrent connections to see any potential for an observable difference. ________________________________ From: "david@smooth1.co.uk" <david@smooth1.co.uk> To: informix-list@iiug.org Sent: Monday, May 4, 2009 6:41:32 AM Subject: Re: FASTPOLL with AIX What exactly does FASTPOLL do?
