Remote database access
Posted in 2018
A user on Informix 12.10.FC7 under RHEL7 asked how to query Microsoft SQL Server tables from Informix (the reverse of MSSQL's linked-server access to Informix). Respondents pointed to IBM Informix Enterprise Gateway / Gateway Manager (and the 'with DRDA' variant), a separately licensed add-on that connects via ODBC Level 2 drivers, while cautioning that the product and its documentation are old, support for modern OS/database versions is unclear, and it costs money plus is fiddly to configure. One poster suggested a free alternative he had used successfully: FreeTDS with unixODBC, configured by hand-editing Unix text files. The original poster thanked everyone but reported no chosen solution or outcome.

Good morning, Currently we are running Informix 12.10.FC7 on RHEL7. An application requires to access tables on an MSSQL server. Within MSSQL a linked server can be used to access Informix. Is there a way to do it the other way round? The idea is that from the Informix database I access the MSSQL tables. Regards Kenneth
You would need "IBM® Informix® Enterprise Gateway with DRDA" which is a seperately charged product: https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSGU8G_12.1.0/com.ibm.mig.doc/ids_mi g_037.htm http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=pub1g251036600 Regards, David. > On 16 February 2018 at 10:04 KENNETH PENZA <kenneth.penza@gov.mt> wrote: > > > Good morning, > > Currently we are running Informix 12.10.FC7 on RHEL7. Kenneth, David's suggestion "puzzles" me for the mention to "DRDA". I think there was an "Informix *gateway*" for non-DRDA sources (using ODBC). Maybe I'm just wrong and the "DRDA" includes the ODBC connectivity. My point is that I don't think SQL Server is able to "speak" DRDA. Apart from this, and more important, I'm afraid the Informix Gateway product compatibility with current versions of operating systems would be an issue. And it has costs also. So, in short, the matter may not be that simple. I'll keep this in mind and I'll try to find out more information before next week ;) Regards. See you soon. Hi Fernando, From the first link " Gateway Manager connects the Informix environment with that of any shared-library ODBC Level 2-compliant driver manager and driver on UNIX or Linux. For instance, you can use Gateway Manager with the IBM Informix Enterprise Gateway driver products to access UNIX or Linux database server products. For more information, refer to the IBM Informix Enterprise Gateway with DRDA User Manual." Looks like this includes ODBC and DRDA - DRDA for DB2 connectivity! (ducks) Regards, David. > On 16 February 2018 at 12:36 Fernando Nunes <domusonline@gmail.com> wrote: > > > Kenneth, > > David's suggestion "puzzles" me for the mention to "DRDA". Not being a native speaker, the wording sounded confusing. I checked internally and I could find two products. The Enterprise Gateway and the Enterprise Gateway with DRDA. So it seems there are/were two products. I imagine the "with DRDA" is a superset of the other. The problem as I commented is that the publish dates are really old. So the documented supported versions (OS and databases) must also be old. That doesn't mean they don't work but creates a grey area that I tend to avoid whenever possible. It's particularly tricky as this involved costs. Regards. Hi, David, Thanks a lot for the pointers. Fernando, sure see you next week. Thanks Kenneth
Sent from my iPad Hi Kenneth, Long time no see! Informix enterprise gateway manager should do that for you. > On 16 Feb 2018, at 10:04, KENNETH PENZA <kenneth.penza@gov.mt> wrote: > > Good morning, > > Currently we are running Informix 12.10.FC7 on RHEL7. Kenneth Many moons ago I successfully used freeTDS and unixODBC for this purpose. Not used for large numbers of users but it worked and was free :-) Set up is by command line editing of unix text files, but not unduly difficult. Web sites for both products seem to be active and up-to-date, might be worth investigating. I have also used Gateway Manager, which again, works, but is just as difficult to set up and expensive (if memory serves).
