TCP problem upgrade 9.40 to 11.50
Posted in 2009
On Solaris 10, upgrading from IDS 9.40 to 11.50, the instance started over shared memory but the TCP listener failed with "err = -25572: oserr = 8 ... Network driver cannot bind a name to the port." Suggestions included matching the protocol in sqlhosts and NETTYPE (tlitcp vs soctcp on Solaris), checking the port wasn't already in use (lsof), verifying DBSERVERNAME/DBSERVERALIASES, and checking hostname resolution. The fix was the hostname: adding an alias in /etc/hosts and using the short name (orgrimmar) instead of informix.orgrimmar in sqlhosts let the server come online; the dotted name appeared to be the problem.

Good afternoon everyone.
I'm doing some tests to upgrade from version 9.40 to 11.50.
I am in a Solaris 10 Sparc 64bits.
My instance works with share memory (shm) but when I tried to use tcp
(onsoctcp or ontlitpc) It does not start up.
Anybody know how to resolve the problem?.
In online.log message

AFAIK ontlitcp is used on Solaris.
Your problem most likely is tied to your hostname resoultion.
If you try to "ping informix.orgrimmar" what does it return?
If it is server only sqlhosts file, put asterisk (*) in 3rd column.

Of course, because on Solaris ontlitcp is used, and you must set
appropriate NETTYPE
NETTYYPE tlitcp,1,50,NET

The possible reason is that port designated for oninit is used by some
other process. That process could be a old oninit process. I would use
lsof utility to check if that port is used by some other process. You can
download lsof utility from http://www.sunfreeware.com for your OS version.
Usage: as root: lsof -i<port_number>
where port_number is the port used by your engine.

On a different issue, shouldn't your first NETTYPE entry be
"NETTYPE ipcshm, 1, 50, CPU"? NET VPs aren't usually efficient for
shared memory connections.

Hi Servio,
In the sqlhosts, you have ontlitcp, while in the ONCONFIG you have NETTYPE
soctcp.
In Solaris, we use TLI for TCP communication, rather than sockets (SOC).
Can you try just changing the NETTYPE in the ONCONFIG file, to change from
'soctcp' to 'tlitcp', make sure you have TLI in both sqlhosts and ONCONFIG,
and see if that helps?
Regards,
Veronica.

Hello everyone. I put in sqlhost (ontlitcp) and onconfig (NETTYPE tlitcp,1,50,NET) and It did not work. I put in sqlhost (onsoctcp) and onconfig (NETTYPE soctcp,1,50,NET) and It did not work. I provee ping informix.on and responde is alive. I use diferent ports and It did not work. In this machine is working other instance but in version 9.4 and In this instance work with SOC and TLI. Anybody have other idea? Thank a lot Servio Velasco

Dos recomendaciones:
1.- Me llama la atencion que veo una sola linea con los dos tipos de conexión
en el sqlhosts. Si no es un error por el cut-paste en el correo, separala asi:
prueba onipcshm informix.orgrimmar prueba
pruebatcp ontlitcp informix.orgrimmar 1528
2.- Cambia el valor de host (informix.orgrinmar) por la IP de tu servidor.
Saludos

What about the settings for SERVERNAME and DBSERVERALIASES? SERVERNAME
should be set to prueba and DBSERVERALIASES set to pruebatcp. Also note,
though this has nothing to do with your problems, the NETTYPE for ipcshm
should specify CPU poll threads not NET VP poll threads. NET VP poll
threads listening for shared memory activity burn too much CPU time. Also
if the shared memory connection is not just for administration, ie if it is
heavily used, there should be the same number of poll threads configured as
there are CPU VPs.

Oh, wait, what is 'informix.orgrimmar'? Is that the name of the machine? Is
the machine named 'informix' in domain 'orgrimmar'? If not, the sqlhosts
entries are not correct. What is set in the server that's working?

Art I added a new nickname in the /etc/hosts 180.180.169.151 informix.orgrimmar orgrimmar loghost And Modified the sqlhosts with this nickname: pruebatcp tlitcp orgrimmar 1528 The instance is runnig...and online. I belive the problem is the dot in the name of de machine. Thanks a lot Servio
