Re: The escape key

When I first ran into the ESCAPE delay I noticed that it only occurred on ANSI/VTxxx compliant terminals. That is, it appeared that the Informix screen input routines were smart enough to know when no ESCAPE was expected, and thus no wait was needed. The shop I was working in had a mixture of Wyse 50 and VT100 clone terminals, and the difference in response was quite obvious. If this is still the case, another approach might be to use a terminal or emulation that doesn't use ESCAPE as a lead-in character if that is an option for you. With the units of $DBESCWT being whole seconds, it doesn't allow for much fine tuning. My guess is that, as Jonathan Leffler suggests, $DBESCWT was primarily intended to allow the wait to be extended rather than reduced.
