Informix and ARCserveIT (on NT)
Posted in 1999
Hi, We've just started using ArcServeIT here for backing up our NT Servers & workstations (which is fine) and also trying to use it for our database servers (which isn't). I was wondering whether or not anyone is *actually using* the informix agent for ARCserveIT on NT, as it seems such a poorly designed piece of software. We're currently running continuous logging here, currently to a dedicated DAT on the machine, and Data backups going to another dedicated local DAT. We were hoping to be able to backup the logical logs to the local DAT's on our servers, and then do data backups to our DLT jukebox, but that just looks completely out of the question! Installing the arcserveit informix agent replaces an informix dll (msmdll.dll) so that *all* backups (including logs) are sent to your arcserveit server rather than going to anywhere specified to informix. This is compounded by the problem that all logs and data must be sent to the same tape, so that while you are backing up your databases, you cannot do logical log backups (which seems incredibly dangerous to me!) I always thought that as a matter of principle, you should never do continuous logging to the same drive as backups (and I belive Informix itself won't let you). As we were planning to use a jukebox, it means if we use it at all, no logical log backups can occur. I addition, you must configure the agent to write to a specific tape (not just a tape drive), by the name you give to it when you format the tape (so you can't replace a full tape without re-configuring the informix agent). There's also the matter that trying to do a backup from ARCserveIT itself crashes the informix agent immediately. CAI's web/email-based support is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. So - does anybody actually *use* this product? Does anyone know of any good alternatives? The only ones I could find are HP Omniback (but that only seems to backup informix on HPUX) and Legato Networker. I know legato is expensive, but does anyone know just how expensive it is? Thanks in advance for any info or opinions, Andrew Lawrenson (we're using informix 7.23.TC9, but hoping to move to 7.3 soon) -- -- - Remove nospam. from address when replying by email - Any Opinions Expressed within are Mine and not necessarily those of my Employer
