I think Informix is making a big mistake by trying to make > people move over to win95 before they are ready Informix have a problem though! They now have to develop for Windows 95/NT. Anything else would be crasy. Having done this it may be a major effort to make it run on Windows 3.1. Memory adressing (32/16 bit) comes to mind, as do OLE support and many other issues. They also can't put any limits into NewEra to make it possible to make a version for Windows 3.1. That would also be crasy. An example here is that OLE is significantly more capable on Windows 95/NT than on 3.1 so a spearate version without these capabilities would have had to be made. With the significant competition in development tools they also can't spend any time up front on making it run on Windows 3.1. Most people simply need a Windows 95/NT version very soon now or they may see the customers going to the competition. As you can see from this news group it's allready a problem that it doesn't run on 95/NT. What they could do is make a Windows 95/NT version first and then try to port it back to Windows 3.1 afterward. That would have to be done by a separate group of people from those who shall continue to develop new versions for Windows 95/NT to not slow down that process. Ver. 3.0 will need several enhancments as soon as in any way possible. In my book all this translates to Windows 95/NT beeing the important thing to do, and Windows 3.1 may come later. Another issue altogether is why don't people upgrade. The upgrade is easy. I work at a site with more than 100 PC users. They have upgraded gradually to Windows 95 without any sort of problems, not even user support (with one person responsible for this). The fact is many problems exibited under Windows 3.1/3.11 dissapeared after the upgrade and users as well as the support person are much more happy. I think the problems of upgrading to Windows 95 are exagerated. The need for more powerfull machines isn't an issue here as we talk about NewEra applications that will need enough of a PC that running Windows 95 shouldn't be a problem. Let's get NewEra 3.0 (and 3.1, 3.2 +++) as soon as in any way possible, that's the important issue. It must of course first and formost run on 95/NT. If it only runs on Windows 95/NT that is ok. The alternative for us is another tool. Nils.Myklebust@ccmail.telemax.no NM-data AS, Toyenbekken 21, Oslo, Norway My opinions are those of my company
