How to change default locale to UTF8 under IDS 9.3 Win2K ?

Hi Everybody.
I have been running IDS 9.3 under Win2K with default locale en_us.8859-1, now
i'm expecting to migrate my databases to enable UTF8/Unicode locale, in order
to store all data in UTF8/Unicode format.
Does Informix support Unicode?
I checked with GLS munaul and gls files in gls directory,
the only thing related to utf8
and unicode are
Filename: lc11/en_us/e005.lco
Language: English
Territory: United States
Code Set: unicode
Locale Name: en_us.unicode
Filename: lc11/en_us/e01c.lco
Language: English
Territory: United States
Code Set: utf8
Locale Name: en_us.utf8
I tested this as the following
I've set CLIENT_LOCALE, DB_LOCALE, SERVER_LOCALE to en_us.UTF8, then i ran SQl
statements via SQl edt as the below
create database test_utf8
select * from systables where tabid=9
the columns SITE in line GL_COLLATE has value en_us.57372 (57372 means utf8 )
This means that my database test_utf8 is using UTF8 Locale ?, i also tried to
create one table
inside test_utf8 with clolumns with varchar & nvarchar data type, and then
insert characters other than english chars as ký, é.., the statement failed
with error megs "An illegal character has been found in the statement", but
it's no problem when i use default locale en_us.8859-1 to insert signed
semilar chars as above.
In other word that it seems like only for english
Any experienced about this problem, pls help me to correct it.
Best regards
Bernard

Hi Bernard,
You might want to try setting=20
CLIENT=5FLOCALE=3Den=5Fus.cp1252
DB=5FLOCALE=3Den=5Fus.utf8
and mode con cp select=3D1252
If you are using a cmd shell, I would also suggest not using "Raster=20
Fonts" as they don't seem to display cp1252 characters correctly (i think=20
it is a cp437 font).
Good Luck,
Gerry

Hi Bernard,
Quick test,
Launch the cmd shell that you normally run sql statements in.
hold down the Alt key and in the numeric keypad type 171 (do not use the=20
main keyboard) and release the alt key.
repeat with Alt 172 and Alt 173.
If this displays as 1/2 1/4 and upside-down ! then you font is a OEM font=20
and you should set CLIENT=5FLOCALE to en=5Fus.cp850. and mode con cp=20
select=3D850.
It is possible that neither font supplied by windows for your operating=20
system is going to display cp1252 data correctly.
You can use the same test for the other applications that you use to enter =
and retrieve data to determine the CLIENT=5FLOCALE that you should use for =
that connection to the IDS server.
Let me know if you have further problems.
Gerry.
