error 1235 running a program built on informix9.21

Hi, We are trying to move from informix7.30 to informix9.21. Our software uses esql/C to interact with database. We run solaris2.6. The compilation of software under 9.21 was ok except we needed to link in a new library '-ldl' at the end of other libs. Now, when we run it, the fetches from database are fine, but when we update anything, we get error 1235 'Character host variable is too short for the data'. Although the host variable sizes and the table columns have not changed. The host variables are char. arrays of either the same length as table columns or a byte bigger.
