Moving to a new server.

I am planning to move to a new server. The current server is running HP-UX 10.2 and the new server will be running HP-UX 11.0. The database is stored on disks which are external to the machines (EMC disk array). After setting up the new machine, we plan to disconnect the disk array cable and attach them to the new machine. Is there a problem with this approach? Would there be a problem if we also upgrade the version of IDS at the same time (from 7.31uc5 to 7.31ud5)? I am under a tight time schedule and would not have the time to unload and load all of the data. If the above appproach is not feasible then I would take a backup on the old machine and then perform an imported restore on the new machine. Any comments would be appeciated. Thanks in advance - Dave
This approach can work, yes. The upgrade within the same minor version is painless and can be done at the same time, all archives taken under uc5 will be restorable under ud5 though taking a safety archive immediately before unplugging the array is just prudent. Because 7.31UD5 is certified for both HP-UX 10.2 and 11.0, I strongly recommend that you upgrade IDS on the old server following the steps laid out in the Migration Guide. Bring the instance up under 10.2, check the integrity, do a level 0 backup. Then shutdown, disconnect the disk and install the HP-UX 11 server. Your approach would probably work, it is just a little risky. I would think you're okay provided you used links for your chunk paths. Not sure what would happen on HP-UX platform when you reconnect you EMC Array to the new server, but my gut feeling is that you may not necessarily get the same device names. Using links, this wouldn't matter. Then again, even if you didn't use links on your old server, in theory, you could create link names that mimic your old server's device names.
