It is probably safe to say that browser-based applications are the most popular, but of course there is still plenty of program development outside the browser. But in the browser-based app environment Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP rules: Most popular web server: Apache http://www.securityspace.com/s_survey/data/200506/com/index.html http://www.securityspace.com/s_survey/data/200506/index.html http://survey.netcraft.com/Survey/Reports/0507/ http://news.netcraft.com/archives/web_server_survey.html Most popular module(s) for Apache: PHP http://www.securityspace.com/s_survey/data/man.200506/apachemods.html To bolster the "there-isn't-any-Java" argument: http://www.securityspace.com/s_survey/data/man.200506/techpen.html Bonus: http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2004/04/28/interview_with_miguel_de_icaza_cofounder_of_gnome_ximian_and_mono.html

Hint: it's *not* Java. > To bolster the "there-isn't-any-Java" argument: > http://www.securityspace.com/s_survey/data/man.200506/techpen.html welll...... the argument is not that. The argument is: "Java is NOWHERE near as widespread as it is hyped to be" And I wasn't talking about the client-side. But I guess in the client-side, it's even less so. :) -- Cheers Nuno Souto in sunny Sydney, Australia wizofoz2k@yahoo.com.au.nospam

One example ... the American Idol TV show. Java handles the connection to the phone network insrting the votes counting the votes responding to the voters that their vote has been counted BTW: The database: Oracle RAC. Java, in many cases is being used not with the web but as a replacement for what has traditionally been done with C/C+. -- Daniel A.
