Hi, i like know if is possible with ONTAPE to do a full backup to an
instance of IDS of PC1, and later to do a restore this backup in other
machine (PC2), other IDS.
I've IDS 7.31 on Windows NT Server.
Is it possible with ontape?
I must have the same IDS (Version and Serial), and the same dbspaces
and size them?
Exist other metod for to do this without to do "dbexport" of the base?
Example:
1) Backup of IDS of PC1
2) Restore the before backup onto IDS of PC2
How can i do this?
Thank you very much!!

Yes, it's possible

Windows NT Server.

You must have the same IDS version and exactly the same disks
(chunks) configuration.
The ONCONFIG file must be the same in the target machine, as
well as SQLHOSTS, or at least have the same entries that exist
in the original file.
Once your restore performed, you can, of course, modify the
ONCONFIG parameters as you want.

Eist other metod for to do this without to do "dbexport" of the base?

Other methods can be onunload/onload, dbload, load/unload
combined with dbschema. Please refer to Informix Migration
Guide, Chapter Utilities for Data Migration, for detailed
information and how-to-do guidelines

I hope all this will be usefull.

Olmedo is almost correct. You CAN do this if you follow two simple rules:
o All chunk paths must exist and be at least as large on the target as they
were on the source machine.
o Any ONCONFIG file parameters that deal with disks must be identical, for
example:
ROOTNAME
ROOTPATH
ROOTOFFSET
ROOTSIZEPHYSFILE (This can be changed later if needed)
MIRROR
MIRRORPATH (The MIRROR parameters can be changed after restore and dropping
the root mirror if needed.)
LOGFILES
LOGSIZELOGSMAX
All other ONCONFIG parameters, including DBSERVERNAME, DBSERVERALIASES,
SERVERNUM, NETTYPE, etc. CAN be different however you must match the
DBSERVERNAME and DBSERVERALIASES entries with corresponding entries in the
sqlhosts file which SHOULD be different from the original AT LEAST in the
hostname column and if the source server will be online at the time then
the servername (corresponding to DBSERVERNAME) must be different.
That's it. To other methods? Dbexport/dbimport, onunload/onload,
dbaccess>unload/dbload, my utilities myschema and dbcopy, mydbexport/dbimport replacement utility myexport/myimport, dbschema and
echo 'insert into tablename
select * from databname@source:tablename'|dbaccess databname -Take your pick.

In order to replicate an instance to another machine using ontape, I think
you must have the same version of Informix running on both machines, but I
could be wrong. I know onunload/onload require the same versions but
ontape may or may not be the same. Furthermore, I believe you must have
the same OS on both machines. No cross platform restores are possible, I
don't think. In other words, you can't do a level 0 archive on an NT
instance, and then try to restore it onto a Solaris instance.
On the target machine, you must have the partitions already laid out as in
the original machine. For example, if you have the rootdbs in
/informix/rootdbs on the original box, the target box must also contain a
partition called /informix/rootdbs when you try to restore it. A good
idea would be to do an onstat -d to get the partition names and sizes of
the original box and use those to create new partitions on the target box
before restoring.
The other option is to do a dbexport as this exports the database(s) in
ASCII format. Then no matter which platform you're running or version of
Informix, you should be able to do a dbimport no problem.
A final option would be to use onload/onunload. As mentioned above, you
have to have the same version of Informix running on both machines or else
no dice. This is because this utility writes the database in binary pages
so you can't go from a 4K page instance like NT onto a 2K page instance
like solaris.
