Problem in ontape -p
Posted in 2010
User tried to clone a production IDS 11.50 server onto a test box by copying the level-0 ontape archive file via SFTP and running 'ontape -p'. It failed with 'Directory must have RWX permission for owner/group informix /data/ism/dbspaces/', 'File ... not found', and 'open tape device failed code -1 errno 0', despite the directory and file being owned by informix with 777/770. Suggestions: use 770 on directories and 660 on files, ensure the whole parent path is traversable, use 'ontape -r' (not -p, which is for HDR/RSS secondaries) followed by onmode -m, and check that $INFORMIXDIR/etc and /bin are owned informix:informix per $INFORMIXDIR/etc/IDSfiles. The poster reported the error persisted after the permission changes, and no confirmed resolution is recorded.

Hello IDS Group,
i have the following problem:
i want to setup a test environment for the database server, therefore i build
a neu server with the same dbspaces like the real server in the test server.
the i tried the to run ontape -p. of course i get the file (around 3GB) from
the real server and transfer it through SFTP to other server. then rename it
with the name of the 2nd Server and run ontape -p. i get the following message:
>ontape -pRestore file /data/ism/dbspaces/tuhhsrvforsch_1_L0 and press Return to
continue ...
Directory must have RWX permission for owner/group informix /data/ism/dbspaces/
File /data/ism/dbspaces/tuhhsrvforsch_1_L0 not found, continuing ...
Physical restore failed - function open tape device /data/ism/dbspaces/ failed
code -1 errno 0
Program over.
--
The directories /data/ism/dbspaces have 777 als RWX and the file
tuhhsrvforsch_1_L0 has 770 als RWX. And the owner informix:informix
but i think that the mistake is another an mentioned above ..
any help will be welcome

Permissions on the directory should be 770 and on the file 660. Try that.
Also, ontape -p is to restore without fast recovery in preparation for
bringing a secondary server (HDR or RSS) online. If you want to create a
stand alone server that is a clone of the production server, you should be
using ontape -r, then apply any logical logs from the primary that you want
to in order to bring the copy up-to-date (or not). Once ontape is complete
and you tell it that there are no level 1 or level 2 archives to restore and
no more logs to restore, run onmode -m and wait for the server to come to
full online mode before shutting it down to perform a normal restart.

The Informix has the same version 11.50.UC1 and the directories and files are
770 and 660. There is no symbolic link.

Please make sure the product files and directories have the correct owner
and
group informix:informix, especially the directories $INFORMIXDIR/etc
$INFORMIXDIR/bin. The list of permission's are located in
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/IDSfiles Informix checks the data files to the product
directories.
