Rootdbs is Full
Posted in 2009
After upgrading from IDS 9.40 to 11.50.FC3, the user saw repeated "DBspace rootdbs is full" warnings plus SCHAPI errors (-229, -131, -271) from the scheduler; adding a 130MB chunk didn't help as rootdbs refilled when update statistics ran. Art Kagel first asked whether temp dbspaces existed/were in DBSPACETEMP (they were), and the poster found the sysadmin database in rootdbs was growing hugely. Suggested remedies: move sysadmin to its own dbspace, or identify and disable the scheduler sensors (e.g. persistent SQL history / auto update stats) filling rootdbs; an IBM technote link was posted. No confirmation of the outcome appears in the thread.

Hi to ALL
First of all I would like to inform you that we are running IBM Informix
Dynamic Server Version 11.50.FC3
and we have perform last week a migration from IBM Informix Dynamic Server
Version 9.40 FC6 .
Since the migration we get the following message:
WARNING: DBspace rootdbs is full.
In the onconfig file the root size was:
ROOTSIZE 63000
So we add another chunck of 130MB for rootdbs and when we run update
statistics on the databases the message
appears again and the rootdbs filed up again

Do you have temp dbspaces allocated? Are theu listed in the DBSPACETEMP en=
vironment variable? It looks like your instance is using the rootdbs dbspa=
ce for sorting which is a bad thing and can only happen if it has no temp d=
bspaces to use or doesn't know that there are temp dbspaces.

Hi Art,
Yes I have temp dbspaces
DBSPACETEMP tempdbs1,tempdbs2,tempdbs3
It seems that sysadmin database keeps a lot of records and this database is
located in rootdbs.
Keep in mind that we have around 120 databases in one DBSpace and we start
getting this message when we start running update statistics on those
databases.
Is there a way to shrink sysadmin database in because now we get some more
messages like after we restart the instance:

You can move sysadmin to another dedicated dbspace (search the forum, someo=
ne posted instructions for doing that a few weeks ago) or you can find the =
scheduler sensors that are filling rootdb and disable them (I posted instru=
ctions for doing that last week).
Possibly you have configured persistent SQL history or the auto update stat=
s is doing it

You can move sysadmin to another dedicated dbspace (search the forum, someo=
ne posted instructions for doing that a few weeks ago) or you can find the =
scheduler sensors that are filling rootdb and disable them (I posted instru=
ctions for doing that last week).
Possibly you have configured persistent SQL history or the auto update stat=
s is doing it

Hi Art,=20
Yes I have temp dbspaces=20
DBSPACETEMP tempdbs1,tempdbs2,tempdbs3=20
It seems that sysadmin database keeps a lot of records and this database is=
=20
located in rootdbs.=20
Keep in mind that we have around 120 databases in one DBSpace and we start=
=20
getting this message when we start running update statistics on those=20
databases.=20
Is there a way to shrink sysadmin database in because now we get some more=
=20
messages like after we restart the instance:=20

Do you have temp dbspaces allocated? Are theu listed in the DBSPACETEMP en=
=3D=20
vironment variable? It looks like your instance is using the rootdbs dbspa=
=3D=20
ce for sorting which is a bad thing and can only happen if it has no temp d=

bspaces to use or doesn't know that there are temp dbspaces.=20

Hi to ALL=3D20=20
First of all I would like to inform you that we are running IBM Informix=3D=
20=20
Dynamic Server Version 11.50.FC3=3D20=20
and we have perform last week a migration from IBM Informix Dynamic Server=
=3D=20
=3D20=20
Version 9.40 FC6 .=3D20=20
Since the migration we get the following message:=3D20=20
WARNING: DBspace rootdbs is full.=3D20=20
In the onconfig file the root size was:=3D20=20
ROOTSIZE 63000=3D20=20
So we add another chunck of 130MB for rootdbs and when we run update=3D20=20
statistics on the databases the message=3D20=20
appears again and the rootdbs filed up again=3D20=20
