Saving/Restoring dbspace(s) only
Posted in 2015
User on IDS 11.50/11.70 asked whether individual dbspaces can be backed up and restored on their own. Answers: only ON-Bar (with a storage manager) can archive/restore a single dbspace, and such a restore must be rolled forward to current logs — you can't revert one dbspace to an older point in time while the rest of the system stays current, or Informix flags it as inconsistent. Since the real goal was migrating a ~400 GB database between states, posters recommended HPL or external tables (parallel jobs with named pipes) or copying chunks instead of dbexport. An IBM developer later noted 12.10.xC6 adds per-database point-in-time restore via tenant databases isolated in their own dbspaces.

Hi to all, i work with informix 11.50 and 11.70, and i'm wondering if i can save only one or some dbspaces and restore them ? thanks in advance
Hello: AFAIK you have to set up an Storeage Manager and use Onbar. With onbar you can archive a single dbspace. You can also restore that
dbspace and roll it forward to current state if damaged. You cannot, as I
suspect you want to do, use onbar to backup an older state of the dbspace
and later restore it to that old state. It would be inconsistent with the
other dbspaces and Informix would mark it as such until the logs were
rolled forward to current time and refuse to access it.

OK
First, thanks for your answers
I understand that there's only onbar to do so
In fact, i have to migrate a big database (about 400 gb) from a state A to a
state B (many scripts to run), i know i can do dbexport but it will be very
long, so i was thinking about saving/resorting a dbspace :
1- Add a dbspace
2 - Create a empty db on this dbspace
3 - Migrate the db and resultant db will be on the new dbspace
4 - save the dbspace
5 - Restore the dbspace
thanks again
If you use chunks, just copy them from one server to other Anyway and put
your new server online anyway I suggest you to use HPL.
Regards.

Use HPL (or external tables)? Run 2x NUMCPUVPs HPL jobs in parallel and
use named pipes. Then come back in a couple of hours and it will all be
done
Cheers

thanks for your good ideas have a nice day
New In version 12.10.xC6 is the ability to restore dbspaces (i.e a
database) to different points in time as the rest of the system. In order
to do this you must setup your system correctly this means having only one
database in the desired dbspaces/smart blobspaces., you are requesting to
restore. Informix will guarantee that only one database objects (table,
indexes,...) can be created in a a dbspace or set of dbspaces when you
create a tenant database.
You can now restore a database to a point in time different that the rest
of the system -:)
