update statistics for procedure?

Hi all...weird problem. We run Informix 9.21.FC7X3 on an AIX 4.3.3 server and use a OLE middleware driver for some apps. Sometimes, the middleware driver cannot connect to our database. Sounds like a 3rd party issue with the driver, right? Well, if I run 'update statistics for procedure' the problem goes away immediately! I have done this so many times that I know it is not coincidence. IBM has little to say on the subject because of the involvement of the 3rd party plumbing, but I really think its on the server side. Any ideas or help appreciated.
It's really on server site. A procedure is reoptimized before execution (new query plan built) each time a table selected in the spl has changed significant. This can be avoided by calling "set optimization low" before the procedures are called. Nigrate to version 9.4 and this "feature" will be gone.
