In 2001 when IBM took over, sale of new licenses was more than $250 million dollars. I think in 2004 it was down to $100-120 million dollars. According to a report by 2008-10 new license revenues from Informix will be down to $10 million. It is also suspected that majority of new wins is to existing customers only, for some new projects.
I don't know who said it, but it seems the only company which considers Informix a competition is IBM :-) Just take a look at the number of VARs who have dropped support for Informix in the last 2/3 yrs. When was the last time you heard about a new win? Before IBM took over, I use to look forward to quarterly results where at least I cud learn about new wins. Now no ones hears about it. The guys who sold Informix to IBM were all Mutual fund holders who simply gave up competing with Oracle. they wanted a quick return and some sort of salvage for whatever they burnt on Informix. It is extremely foolish to even assume, let alone believe, that IBM will seriously pursue Informix. It just doesn't make business sense to have two products competing with each other. It may work in Auto Industry (GM competes with Saturn), but not in software.
