Solaris uses unused physical memory to hold recently used pages in buffer. =
It only swaps them out when you need the memory back. This is not the =
exact technical detail, but this is basically what is going on here.
The only way that you can determine exactly how much memory is *actually* =
in use is to parse the output from ps and add it up.
Another little nasty is that you have to *exclude* the onint processes =
from the ps because they are incorrectly reported. the first line of =
onstat -g ses will give you the real amount that Informix is using. You =
can then add that to the ps output and devine your true memory usage.
Don't trust top when reporting Informix oninit processes as it reports =
them incorrectly.
attached is the script I use to determine memory usage (other than =
Infomix).

Hello,
We have a 3000 Ultra which has the following:
Informix DSA 7.24, 512 M physical memory, Solaris 2.5.1, 1 CPU.
When DSA is up, there is about 70 M of physical memory
available listed from vmstat or top. When Informix DSA
is brought down, there is 119 M of physical memory
available (Informix is currently setup to take about 45
M or so of shared memory ...onstat -g seg).
Note that when Informix DSA is down, there are no shared
memory segments or semaphores listed from ipcs, nor oninit
processes listed from ps but there is still only 119 M of
physical memory available.
So, the question is, what is consuming the other 393 M of
physical memory ??
Regards,
David R. Parent
