Network problems with IDS 7.3 and Linux Kernel 2.2.x
Posted in 1999
IDS 7.30 on SuSE Linux 6.x with 2.2.x kernels refused TCP (onsoctcp) connections – shared memory (ipcshm) worked, but the listener thread logged err -25573/oserr 11 ("Network driver cannot accept a connection on the port"), with strace showing EAGAIN after listen(). Several posters confirmed the same symptom; the vendor VP/NET patch didn't help, and reverting to kernel 2.0.36 worked. The originator finally reported success by combining the glibc-2.1.1-7 RPM with a 2.2.10 kernel; kernel 2.2.5, fd-limit patches and NR_OPEN/files-max tweaks did not help. The underlying cause was never identified.

Problem:
- No connection via Sockets and TCP (onsoctcp) to the Informix
Dynamic Server 7.3 data base.
Situation occurs on follwing systems:
- Informix Dynamic Server 7.30 UC7-2 or UC5
- SuSE-Linux 6.1 and Kernel 2.2.5 or SuSE-6.0 and Kernel 2.2.8
Problem:
- Trying a connection with soctcp failed, although database up and
connection via ipcshm works fine.
- Upgrading from glibc-2.0.7 to glibc-2.1.1 didn't help either.
- In spite of Informix statement that IDS 7.3 should run with Kernel
2.2.5 and glibc-2.1.1, it doesn't. A least I do not know the knack for
it.
- onmonitor says problems. "Network down"
- In the online.log stands the messages:
"15:46:34 listener-thread: err = -25573: oserr = 11: errstr = :
Network driver cannot accept a connection on the port."
- Looking at a system trace by an oninit, shows that that the servers
reads the tcp-port from /etc/services and starts a socket connection on
this port, but immediately get after an listen-command the error
"EAGAIN", which leads to the above mentioned log message.
- Even strange, I repace the original SuSE-6.1 - Kernel 2.2.5 with the
official patched SuSE-Kernel 2.0.36 (for many file descriptors) and
although many services has problems booting , the socket communiction
onsoctpc with IDS worked!!! IMHO, this seems to be a problem with
socket access between the kernel and oninit.
Background:
- slqhost:
"tolkien_tcp ontlitcp tolkien sqlexec"
- onconfig:
"NETTYPE soctcp,1,32,CPU"
Has some one other also encoutered this problem, or better and seriously
wanted has some one a work around?
Thanks in advice,
Christian Konrad

tolkien_tcp onsoctcp tolkien sqlexec
The Linux port doesn't support tli sockets (because Linux 2.0.36 doesn't
support them).

This I think you may also find problems with. Check the release notes
there is a problem related to NETTYPE and set soctcp, but it is in the
release notes.

(SuSe-Linux 6.1 kernel 2.2.5) In an other article in this newsgroup Art S. Kagel (Re Network Connection - Linux IDS 17.06.99 22:16) was told to download the latest release. So I installed "Informix Dynamic Server, Linux Edition Suite CPU_VP/NET VPs Patch" but it did not help ... Harald Raffelt
The network connection works fine with Kernel 2.0.36. So if you don't need to use Kernel 2.2.x ... Harald Raffelt
In my first posting I reported a problem with Informix Dynamic Server 7.30
and socket-based TCP (onsoctcp) connections with a Linux 2.2.5-Kernel from
SuSE 6.x.
At first I want to express my sincere thanks to all who posted , email or
phoned me their possible solution or other description of this problem. I
didn't thought that so many have the same problems.
The only solution we found working with our configuration at the moment is
using the glibc-2.1.1-7-RPM-package and the newest 2.2.10-Kernel on top of
the original SuSE distribution. This alone really solved our problems.
Other things we tried, but didn't help:
- Kernel 2.2.5 and a glibc-pathch for many (30k) file descriptors
- Kernel 2.2.5 and the above mentioned glibc-2.1.1-7-RPM-package
- Playing with the NR_OPEN define in "linux/lmits.h" and "linux/fs.h"
and the /proc/sys/fs/files-max and inode-max entries.
I also tried to build the 2.1.1 version of the glibc myself, but this
didn't help the soctcü problem, but cauesed to panic all new build kernels
in the INIT phase of booting ;-( So be careful, if we play with this.
Conclusion: None, for the moment. Unfortunately I have now not the time to
find the differences in the Linux and Glibc sources to track down the real
problem. Although I am now really curious to know them.
So if you know more stuff related to this, please inform me.
Other wise thank you and may the forces of the RDMS never drops you.
Christian.
