How about
DATABASE test
INSERT INTO test SELECT * from prod:test
This only has database test open but uses a distributed database feature
to achieve the remote table name.
For this to work both databases have to be in the same instance of
INFORMIX-OnLine or you need to have INFORMIX-STAR installed.
