ontape -r idle
Posted in 2009
A user on IDS 7.31.UD6 ran 'ontape -r' from a disk-based level-0 archive; the restore appeared to finish without errors but the server sat in Fast Recovery (CKPT REQ), Blocked:CKPT, with almost no I/O. Advice was to check I/O progress (iostat, onstat -u/-D) to confirm nothing was still moving. Art Kagel said this is expected after a physical restore: the engine is waiting for 'onmode -m' to finish recovery and go online, and shutting down first can wreck the instance. Kern Doe doubted onmode -m works while blocked on CKPT; Fernando Nunes noted you can restart with 'oninit -r', force logical recovery, then onmode -m. The original poster never confirmed the outcome.

You can see the log of Tape manager buf if your tape is disk, you can see I/O

If no movement , ontape might waiting for something.
Check chunk or tape or config.

Hi,
Look like the ontape is idle. Only slight i/o happen on rootdbs. Will it be
caused by tape copy?

Is this problem resolved, I'm just curious to know? correct me if I'm wrong
Art, when the engine is in "Fast Recovery" with "Blocked" on CKPT you cannot
run "onmode -m" yet, it will not work. you will have to wait for this "Fast
Recovery (CKPT REQ)" (or should we say "slow recovery") is finished or it may
never be finished for some reasons, perhaps, not having the right tapes, etc...

It depends on the reason for the block. In the case of the fast recovery
after a restore, the engine is actually waiting for you to run onmode -m.
If you shutdown before doing that the engine is hosed.

Jak
When you issue the command:
ontape -r
it show you a list of dbspaces and chunks in the beggining ?
AFTER: Please mount tape 1 on /scratch/uk/lvl_zero and press Return to
continue ...
and
BEFORE:
Continue restore? (y/n)y
Do you want to back up the logs? (y/n)n
it should show you a list of dbspaces and chunks ... IF NOT , maybe you're
using the wrong tape.
If it is showed , the list of chunks should show you the total pages for each
chunk and total pages USED for each chunk.
As restore is running, in other session , you can issue the command:
onstat -D to see the number of restored pages for each chunk.
Please, let me know the Operational system ...
Best regards
