jdbc and informix's NETTYPE parameter

Hi,
We use informix7.3 on Solaris2.6. Consider this example:
NETTYPE ipcshm,1,3,CPU # Configure poll thread(s) for nettype
NETTYPE tlitcp,1,3,NET # Configure poll thread(s) for nettype
Using this, if I bring up 3 isql sesssions and leave them up,then
I get error 25588 on 4th isql session. So the first line works as expected.
Now, I have a java server connecting to informix using jdbc.
I can bring up several servers simultaneously and each retains the
connection (ie. does not close connection during its life). They
connect to the informix using the standard URL format like:
jdbc:informix-sqli://ifmxserver.lan.company.com:2222/testdb:INFORMIXSERVER=ifmxserver
I have a service defined at port 2222 that is an 'ontlitcp' service.
This should connect to informix using TCP so the 2nd NETTYPE line above
should limit me to run only three simultaneoulsy. But I can bring up more.
My intention is to limit my java servers using NETTYPE.
What is wrong here?
Please cc me in your reply if you can.
Thanks.

If by "Java server" you mean an application server of some sort such as
SilverStream or WebSphere, then what is probably happening is that the
application server is using "pooled connections". So each user session
on the app server does not necessarily cause an addition connection to
the database. The app server will typically establish connections as
needed up to some configured limit. Whenever a user session issues a
query the app server will attempt to find an existing idle connection
and use it. If no connections are idle and the connection limit
defined on the app server has not yet been reached, it will establish a
new connection. If the limit has been reached, the app server will
wait for a connection to become available.
If your intent is to limit the number of user sessions to the app
server, there is probably a different configuration parameter on the
app server for this.
