Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
On SuSE Server 8 with OnLine 5.20, logical volume device files kept reverting to root:disk ownership after every reboot, so the engine couldn't start. Suggested fixes: add a chown/chmod command to /etc/init.d/boot.local to reset ownership to informix at boot, and switch from block devices to raw (character) devices, which reportedly avoids the permission reset and also gives better I/O performance (raw said to be ~10-25% faster than cooked, and both faster than filesystem chunks). No confirmation from the poster that it worked.

OnLine v5.20 on SuSE Server 8.
Actually this is really a SuSE question, but their group is pretty
unhelpful. Someone must have experienced this ...?
I have logical volumes in my one volume group whose permissions need to have
a specific setting, thus:
brw-rw---- 1 informix informix 58, 3 Jun 21 2004 rootdbs_1
But on each re-boot these permissions are being reset, so:
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 58, 3 Jun 21 2004 rootdbs_1
and thus the application cannot start.
Obviously I can include a start-up script to change the permissions, but am
I missing something obvious in why they are being reset each time?
thanks

On Suse 2.4.19, we also had to add a "chown" command to:
/etc/init.d/boot.local
Also, you should use raw (character) rather than block devices.

Does it make any difference with OnLine?

Absolutely. Others can probably explain why better than me.

Probably. But why don't you have a go first, and then everyone else can
take the piss .....:-)

Makes huge difference. Permissions don't get screwed-up on re-boot.

Yes. I have not yet tested the Linux RAW support myself, but I have heard
it's on a par with other UNIX raw device support as to the speed gains over
block devices. That is that RAW (char devices) can be 10-25% faster than
COOKED (block) devices and either are another 5-15% faster than filesystem
chunks in IDS.
