The RIGHT first extent size for a table will contain as large a percentage of the initial rows of a table as possible including a reasonable amount of the table's growth. The next extent size will depend on the table's growth rate. A static table would need a minimum next size (ie 16K) while for a slowly growing table one might allocate an entire year's growth in a single next size. For faster growing tables it might not be practical to allocate more than a month's worth of growth for the next size, and for VERY fast growing tables, especially when you have several such, the only solution may be to dedicate a dbspace to each table so they cannot fragment. As to the actual calculation this is in the Administrator's guide and several people, including Jonathon Leffler, have submitted scripts and programs to the IIUG Software Repository implementing that calculation to make things easy.
