Migration from 11.50 to 11.70
Posted in 2015
User asked about migrating Informix IDS from 11.50 to 11.70, comparing in-place migration versus clean install approaches. Respondents provided guidance: in-place migration minimizes downtime and works well for similar hardware/layout; clean install (DBEXPORT/UNINSTALL/INSTALL/DBIMPORT) suits infrastructure rework or hardware changes. User decided on in-place for training machine and clean install for production.

Hi to All i'm planning to migratre from informix ids 11.50 fc9 to 11.70 fc 8 i want to explore the two methods - Migration In place - New Install can you help me or give me some usefuls links please ? Thanks in advance
It depends on how much data there is. I'm an advocate of clean installs. DBEXPORT UNINSTALL old version INSTALL new version Configure new version DBIMPORT Best regards, Martin This electronic message contains information which may be privileged, confidential, or otherwise protected from disclosure. I have done ot both ways. Depends on your goals. If you want to take the opportunity to rework the physical layout or improve the infrastructure (ex. expand the tablespace tablespace for certain dbspaces or change page sizes) then a clean install and migrate is best. If you need to minimize downtime then in place upgrade fills the bill. In Fact, it's for a training machine that is already on a 11.50. i need to minimize workload this time so i'll dot it in place. i'll do complete migration on an new machine for production.
I would say do a migration in-place unless there is a good reason not to such as fixing up a poor storage schema or changing architecture. The main doc you need is the IBM 11.70 migration guide which throughly goes through all the steps detailing the preparation you need to do: http://www-05.ibm.com/e-business/linkweb/publications/servlet/pbi.wss?CTY=US&FNC =SRX&PBL=GC27-3546-06 Some steps are not strictly necessary but if you follow that you should have success. Another useful doc is: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/techarticle/dm-1011upgradeinformi x/index.html Ben.
Hi, _*1/ Migration in place:*_ - this is the method we use when : - you do not change machines (mainly the disks) and the data is stored the same way on disk (no little indian problem) - you cannot afford to waste time (not much dowtime is accepted) - you want to keep the disk layout wheher you are happy with it or not (extents, table storage of a table of an index are the same, etc) - the sizes of the databases are huge (this is relative of course): 100 GB or more _*2/ New install:*_ - this is what we do when: - we want to review the disk organisation of the data on disk (move certain tables from one dbspace to another, change the extents sizes, introduce fragmentation, etc) - we do have the luxury to stop the system and create downtime (systems that can stop over the weekend or even longer) - we have to change all of the hardware (change of servers: IBM Power to Intel, physical to virtualized (VMWARE, etc), etc) - when we want to move from RAID 5 to RAID 10 for example - when the database sizes are small : 100's of MB _*3/ Hybrid solution:*_ (in place with some modification of the disk layout) - this is what we do when; - we want to go fast and do not have much dowtime available - we are mostly happy with the disk layout but we want to take advantage of this move and just review some tables or indexes only - when we want to have more temp dbspaces and of differents sizes - the sizes of the databases are big - we want to keep the huge databases and review the small ones or the ones that are not as critical I do not think that I went all of the way as far as being exhaustive or not. Hope that this helps.
