Oncheck -pe

Good Afternoon
We have attemped to run an oncheck -pe (which prints the extents reports)
it crashed with the following error:
ISAM Error; illegal Key Descriptor (too many parts or too long)
I am aware that oncheck -ce should correct the problem but
should this be run without users and what if any are the pitfalls.
Has anyone seen a similar error ?
I plan to do a level 0 archive and back up the logs prior to the repair
any ideas ?
We are running 7.30 FC5 on a Tru64 4.0d PK4 2100 Alpha
The system is running without any other problems and was rebooted 28 hours ago

oncheck -pe creates files in /tmp. Make sure that /tmp is not full!!
