Well the first thing to do is define the difference between secure auditing and audit trails. Secure Auditing This is the recording of events, such as when someone inserts a record. The key here is to realise that you audit ALL inserted records. Auditing is switched on at system level with default masks to define which events are audited. Each event can be audited for success, failure or both. Each user can also have a mask defined. Audit Trails This is the recording of changes to data in a table. These are best implemented as triggers, with stored procedures doing any processing required. If you wanted to audit changes to records in a table, you would define an update trigger on that table. The trigger could then send the 'old' and 'new' versions of the record to a stored procedure for analysis and logging. The great thing about triggers is that it doesn't matter what front-end you use to update a table. It sounds to me as though you need audit trails, which is the norm IME.
