I hate to be a critic of a nice script, But...
I have come across so many sites with automated log backups (I am referring
to your use of ontape -c) that I don't have much hair left. An example:
I had a site which had crashed, and I restored and then tried loading the
log tapes. The one they gave me and the logs I took off the system. Well
you can guess the rest, there was a big gap between the two. So I asked who
looked after the log backups, and they said "Oh nobody, it's fully automatic.
We just make sure the log tape is in the drive". Notice they said "..THE
log tape...". Arghh! So whenever the system went down, or was re-booted,
yes you guessed it, they overwrote the previous logical logs.
But otherwise the script looks fine. I've finished whinging now.
Cheers,
