Hi, Currently we have used informix IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.50.FC8GE workgroup edition running on hpux. Our production load already full utilize during peak hour. To reduce load on production server, we plan to separated process to another server, means OLTP process will maintain on our production server (Server A) & reporting process will be move/running at new server (server B). What the best method to sync our database from server A to Server B? Replication,High-Availability Data Replication (HDR) server or Remote Standalone (RS) secondary server. Our informix version support to do this & how to do it? Since server B will be allocated at dr sites, Best network bandwidth required to setup HDR & get best performance? Please advice. Thank You
Mohd:
If your communications between your primary datacenter and your DR Site
datacenter is reliable and fast then you can use HDR. If the communications
are not ideal (ie slow or sometimes flaky) then RSS will be the better
choice. If communications are truly intermittent and connectivity comes and
goes, then use ER. Note that if you actively access the secondary, as for
reporting as you are planning to do, you will need to license the software
on the secondary to remain in compliance with your IBM Informix license.
Workgroup Edition supports up to two secondary nodes of HDR and/or RSS
secondaries and unlimited ER nodes.
Setting up HDR or RSS secondaries is very easy. Detailed instructions are
in the Administrator's Guide PDF manual and the online IBM InfoCenter site.
The quick and dirty is that you have two basic choices for how to proceed:
1. Use ifxclone to create the secondary copying directly from the
primary.
2. Use ontape or onbar to restore an archive from the primary with the
-p flag (physical restore only)
Either way once the duplicate server is online just run:
- onmode -s primary <secondary's name> ## on the primary
- onmode -s secondary <primary's name> ## on the secondary
And poof! You are replicating with no downtime or service interruption. ER
is a bit more involved and will require some downtime to prepare the
primary.

Hi, Look like RSS is a best option to us. "RSS secondaries is very easy. Detailed instructions are in the Administrator's Guide PDF manual and the online IBM InfoCenter site." Can you share link/noted as our reference to setup RSS follow best practices implementation. If we have RSS, both node (Server A & B) mode is read & write? means both instance used can access & do updated if necessary and RSS can control data consistency for both server. Thank You
Mohd:
Yes, optionally you can have the secondary be writable. You just have to
set:
UPDATABLE_SECONDARY 1
LOG_INDEX_BUILDS 1in your ONCONFIG file on both servers.
Here's a link to the IBM Informix Knowledge Center pages for Remote
Secondary Servers (RSS):
