Queries on Universal Server - Part I

28/FEB Hello=20 I have the following questions on Universal server ; based on the = literature I read from the http://www.informix.com I request who ever has worked on this product or in the process of = evaluating the product to kindly=20 respond.=20 Thanks & Regards GANESH Extending The Existing Programming Tools To Support Data Types Of = Universal Server :=20 >>The common approaches to extending the tools are C++ Class libraries , = OLE Controls & Java >>applets. Universal server will provide toolkits = to take advantage of all three models for tool >>extension. Question : a) Is the toolkit available now or when it would be = available ? =09 Supporting Windows With OLE : >>Developer can build OCXs to match datablade modules, using the = call-level library to interface to >>universal server. The OCX can be = distributed with the client application run times and appear as >>an = option or an icon in the application. Because OCXs are reusable across = many applications they >> provide significant benefits in developer = productivity. Rather than the developer building the OCX interface, Informix should = itself develop OCX controls and ship it along with Universal server or = enter into business agreement with the 3rd party vendors to write the = OCX interface. At present I find that Informix has only agreement with = vendors for developing data blade modules. >>Illustra already supports an OLE interface, which allows the = construction of OLE custom >>controls, often called OCXs. This interface will be supported in = Universal server. Question : a) Is the OCX controls shipped with Illustra or Is it that = illustra support OLE interface.=20 NewEra Extended with C++ and OLE : >>INFORMIX-NewEra is an example of a next-generation, form-oriented tool = that is extensible using >>class libraries. A NewEra C++ class library = is complementary to the Universal Server DataBlade >>module, extending = NewEra in a way that matches the extensions loaded into the server = against >>which it runs. The class library needs to be created only = once, and then maintained only when the >>data model changes, resulting = in a high level of reusability for this code. Because NewEra 3.0 will >>support OLE, OLE Custom Controls can also be used with NewEra. Question : a) Is this C++ class library available now or when it would = be available ? Java Interface : >>Universal Server will not only provide a database object to support = connections from Java applets >>running in client applications, it will = also support the specification of server functions in the Java >>language. This will enable an entirely new category of application = architecture in which large parts >>of the application are made up of = small independent software modules that can be widely >>distributed and = can execute in either client or server, whichever is the most efficient. Question: Is the specification for server functions in the Java language = available now ?
