Major crackdown on Informix products/ports ?
Posted in 1998
Hi-Folks AN extract from the CEO's press release reads : "-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------" Finnochio said Informix will concentrate on so-called data warehousing products -- expensive computer programs that help managers find intricate patterns in reams of data. Retailers, for example, use data warehousing products to pinpoint their customers' tastes. Customers are willing to pay high prices for advanced data warehousing tools, Finocchio said. Informix also will concentrate on database products tailored to customers that have to manage Web sites. Finocchio said Informix is ahead of competitors like Oracle and International Business Machines Corp (IBM - news) in offering software that can manage massive electronic commerce sites. Informix will avoid cheap, low-end database products for personal computers, an area where Microsoft is beginning to dominate." "-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------" So now they want to concentrate on dataware housing, where there are proven products other than that of Oracle's. Like those from Arbour software, Redbrick systems etc, who are totally focused on dataware housing. Does this mean the new CEO will even abandon porting to Mid and low end Unix servers ? and not even think about a port to Linux ( leaving that big Linux lobby in tears ). What happened to those attractive estimates made by the Linux lobby showing ( big volume with small profit) big profit !!! Or is it like shooting the horse just because you don't know how ride ? -- Have a nice day Felix K. Mathews mailto:mathews@iname.com
